Single Review: Boyzone – ‘Light Up The Night’

2 min read

You would be forgiven for thinking that Irish boy band Boyzone were a thing of the past – given that their last album was released back in 2010 and the success of Ronan Keating’s solo career may have suggested he’d be too busy for his Boyzone brothers.  But fear not, fans – the quartet is well and truly back!  Having released their newest album BZ20 at the back end of last year, the group have unveiled two singles from the 11-track record – the most recent entitled Light Up The Night.

Boyzone - BZ20The piano-heavy pop ballad sees Keating take on lead vocal duties in the uplifting, feel-good track. Backed up by the other members, the group sing a sweet tune directed at a loved one, singing in the infectious chorus “We light up the night/The spark in your eyes/Is more than enough/To steal the dark from the skies”. In typical cheesy boy band fashion, the video clip sees the guys dressed in similar black outfits as they stand around a fire and look up at fireworks. Cheesy clichés aside, the song itself is a great track full of positive vibes and a shining example of why Boyzone are in fact still around doing what they do best.

After 20 years in the business, a group tends to lean into one of two directions: Either they have been doing the same thing for too long and come to sound stale and out of touch, or they use their experience to their advantage, honing their sound to prove why they’ve lasted for so long. Judging by what Boyzone have shown us recently, it seems they’re definitely leaning towards the latter and still have the world at their feet.
