Single Review: Marti Pellow – ‘Devil and the Monkey’

Wet Wet Wet front man Marti Pellow is back this month with a new album and a lead single, both titled Devil and the Monkey.
With a successful 28 year career in music as a solo artist as well as with super group Wet Wet Wet , most notable for the mammoth record breaking single Love Is All Around, the charismatic vocalist hits the radio waves and digital age with his new treat of ear friendly youthfully bouncy pop in the shape of Devil and the Monkey.
The track has a strong eighties influence and is very different to the rest of the tracks on the parent album – its the most pop laden work heard from the singer in quite some time.
The chorus is very catchy, a hook filled chorus line with a layering of spoken word proclaiming the songs title on a loop. On a first listen the track can sound quite overly youthful for a singer of Marti’s age but give it a couple of listens before making your final decision or judgement of the track because it really does grab you with its infectious dose of bubblegum beats and witty lyrics.
A surprising yet reviving track that proves to be less of an unnecessary showcase of Marti’s incredible voice but more a taster of the fun and less serious side of an icon.
