Single Review: Miley Cyrus – We Can’t Stop

2 min read

Miley Cyrus has done a lot of growing up since her days as Disney’s Hannah Montana, and it seems like she wants everyone to know it. Miley returns to the music scene with her edgy new look and general “I don’t care what anyone thinks” attitude with her new single We Can’t Stop. The song is about partying and having a good time, with several allusions to drug use including cocaine (“Everyone in line for the bathroom/Trying to get a line in the bathroom”) and MDMA (“We like to party/Dancing with Molly”). The latter was explained by Miley in an interview with the Daily Mail, where she settled the “Molly/Miley” debate, saying:

MileyCyrusWeCantStop“It depends who’s doing what. If you’re aged ten [the lyric is] Miley, if you know what I’m talking about then you know. I just wanted it to be played on the radio and they’ve already had to edit it so much… I don’t think people have a hard time understanding that I’ve grown up. You can Google me and you know what I’m up to – you know what that lyric is saying.”

If the song itself weren’t controversial enough for the 20 year old, the video has raised a few eyebrows, including some rather bizarre images – a French fry skull, giant teddy bears and Miley making out with a Barbie doll, to name a few. Cyrus holds the record for most views in a day by a female on VEVO, after We Can’t Stop reached 10.7 million within the 24 hours of its premiere.

Despite the controversy and peculiarity of the video, We Can’t Stop is an infectious pop tune which has already become somewhat of a party anthem and will no doubt receive plenty of airplay for the next few months.
