Album Review: Rubylux – Fake Control

Brighton’s Rubylux are an impressive four piece band emerging with a distinctive sound of electronic and acoustic space pop.
Their debut album, Fake Control, took 6 months to record in northern France and the end result has already created quite a buzz outside of their almost-cult following. The band have been enjoying a successful few months touring the world and promoting the release, a slightly more glamorous move from their time playing the streets of their hometown.
The album hooked me right from the first listen. Maybe its down to the fact that I have a real sweet tooth for records like this one but the general sound of these four guys creating something so fun and special with a hint of mainstream grabbed me right from the get go. Fake Control is an album as tight and perfected as you will ever here for a debut act.
Starting the record on a high note, the bands first single, The Boy Could Fly, is a sweet commercial hit giving the album an instant injection of pop fury.
Inside makes for a fantastic acoustic addition, light and sentimental it’s a track about finding the truth inside yourself, showing that these guys are new age softies capable of piecing together not only pulsating pop gems but also quality ballads.
What You Need has an almost epic feel to it and is one of the albums signature shout along mid tempo tracks. If your a Kings of Leon fan then this one is for you. Its similarities when it comes to feel and sound is uncanny but with original splendor. A real prize when you get to the center of the record.
Of all the songs on Fake Control there is always the track, a number that really stands out and makes you remember a record and the quality of work for what that record represents. For me that track is the albums closer Don’t Forget. Gently guiding you into its smooth, orchestral and ‘spacey’ arrangement with the bands complimenting backing vocals this standout has been promoted to one of my most played iPod songs in the past fortnight. It’s a moving heartfelt song built over a hook-laden chorus and subtle synth backdrop.
Throughout Fake Control you can hear how close the band is and how in touch they are with their art and their sound. The passion in their delivery permeates on every track and their youthful and ambitious musicianship sounds perfected and tight with front man Robs vocals distinctive and flawless.
Fake Control is a superb debut that the band should be proud of.
