Single Review: Hurts – ‘Somebody To Die For’

After a release like 2010’s Happiness, dark synth-pop duo Hurts had quite a lot to live up to with the release of the bands sophomore studio effort, Exile. Released at the start of the year it has already offered us a couple of meaty single releases in the form of the lead, Miracles and sophomore, Blind.
So far the singles released from Exile have been the pick of the new crop – both Miracles and Blind being two of the best songs on Exile and therefore no surprise came with the revelation that these two tracks would front the new release. Thankfully they have done a great job at picking single #3 – Somebody to Die For.
The track is penciled in for release on 21st July and is another Hurts penning drenched in the highest quality that we have now come to expect from the band and is easily comparable, in terms of its structure and sound, to the band’s debut album.
Somebody To Die For is an atmospheric track and one that allows front-man Theo Hutchcraft’s vocals to soar through a rich and musically fruitful instrumentation. The gentle verses sit nicely beside the epic chorus’. The track is pure Hurts – cinematic, atmospheric and musically captivating with a gorgeous orchestral backdrop within the tracks closing that caps the number off with grandeur.
The theme of the song is all about having nothing if you don’t have that special someone as Theo declares “I don’t need this life – I just need somebody to die for” with passion and conviction running thick in the singers eerie-laced vocals and is the perfect addition to the Exile and Hurts single vault.
