Single Review: Katy Perry – ‘Unconditionally’

1 min read

The timing is right for a ballad from Katy Perry. She’s released a pop song (Roar), an adventurous R&B song (Dark Horse), and now it’s time to show the emotional side of the upcoming album Prism – with her single Unconditionally.

Unconditionally350x350It’s the type of title that makes the gossip columns go wild – who is Perry loving unconditionally? The pop superstar told MTV, “It’s a universal love song that everyone’s going to be able to relate to no matter the age, no matter male or female.” What’s that, you love John Mayer? Thought so.

The track itself is a heartfelt ballad, and Katy sings beautifully. It starts with some percussive beats, which almost made me think it could do the very now thing and turn into a soaring dance track. But nup, it’s just a ballad.

Not a bad thing for those who love a good, strong, sentimental love song on their radio. Because it will be played. Unconditionally.

But in a controversial review, I would say if you put Unconditionally up against the other ballad taking over our radios – Miley Cyrus’ number one, Wrecking Ball smashes it. But here’s a thought – Katy Perry naked on a wrecking ball. Now that’s a winning image. What was I talking about again?
