Single Review: Katy Perry – ‘Roar’
1 min readRoar is Katy Perry’s newie and it ticks all the boxes. It’s a catchy, easy listening pop anthem complete with her favourite type of motif – the girl power, be yourself, zero to hero message.
Perry has said one of her favourite songs in her catalogue is Firework because of that uplifting, you-can-do-anything attitude it has. Roar is a lot like Firework in this way, but it offers more of a bouncy confident vibe – and it’s very addictive.
The only thing that gets my goat is the use of the “eye of the tiger” phrase in the chorus. It’s a pet peeve of mine when pop stars use intertextuality. It’s like hey, have you even seen Rocky III?
Not that it needed promoting because mega pop-tress Perry could record paint dry and still make number one (which Roar already is by the way), but Perry went all out jungle for the MTV VMA’s this week to do so. She wore a diamond encrusted grill on her teeth, which gave her an excuse to continually growl (growl…roar, its marketing genius!) complete with a not so subtle leopard print dress. It really makes you wonder, what would she have worn if her new song was called Moo?
Roar is the first single from Perry’s upcoming fourth studio album Prism.
