Single Review: Iggy Azalea – ‘Fancy’ (feat. Charli XCX)

2 min read

It’s a crime we haven’t got hold of Iggy’s debut album, The New Classic yet.  It’s been promised to us for a while but due to record label contracts and all that other stuff that no one really cares about, we’ve had to wait to get our greedy little mitts on it.  In the meantime, new single Fancy gives us a taste of what to expect when it finally arrives.

IggyAzalea-FancyIggy’s never been one to shy away from the limelight and her new single is no different; with its heavy lyrics, hip-hops beats and sexy swagger it grabs you by the neck and throttles you.  Azalea is already a mega star in her head so why shouldn’t she portray what she is obviously striving for in the future?  With definite influences in Missy Elliot, and almost playing a character or parody of herself like Eminem is renowned for, Iggy shows she has studied hard to get to where she is.

The track saunters through bars of lyrics ranging from rap ramblings to self obsessed hooks in the flick of a heartbeat, while Azalea talks about riches, style, sex and ego.  There might be nothing new here -maybe lacking in intelligent hip-hop lyrics that seem to be more popular these days – but Iggy is taking it back to the 90s with the vibe she’s trying to create, and with her over confidence, she easily pulls it off.

The track is helped out with the inclusion of Charli XCX , which nicely break up the song.  Sounding like and edgy Gwen Stefani, Charli wants to “trash the hotel” and “get drunk on the minibar”, matching like for like with Iggy’s rebel style.  With lesser artists it could seem almost comical, but the song throws off so much attitude you just can’t help but be enthralled by it.

Iggy has taken the best bits of her style, confidence and musical prowess and thrown them all into this track.  It’s made a song that sounds good, has hooks coming out of its ears, and hopefully is an example of how great her debut album is going to be when it’s finally released.
