Single Review: G.R.L – ‘Lighthouse’

2 min read

Girl pop sensation G.R.L infected airwaves globally with their smash hit Ugly Heart last year, a reminder that girl bands still have a rightful place at the top of the world’s mainstream music charts; but with that success soon came tragedy, group member Simone Battle lost her long-term battle with depression and took her own life, which was followed by an outpouring of grief and condolences from fans and fellow entertainers around the globe. G.R.L have confirmed that they will continue recording as a quartet, and in memory of Simone they have released their latest single, Lighthouse.

G.R.L - LighthouseThe introduction to Lighthouse is laden with a beautiful strings arrangement, before long it fades out to allow the guitar and the beat take over; the depth of the track allows us to focus on the lyrics and the emotions resounding from the vocals, which is important for a track with such meaning. The girls offer a hand of support to a friend in need, a notion they would not have hesitated to carry for Simone, the feel of this track really brings the sadness the group must feel in regards to the situation. The video clip also pays a touching tribute to Battle, featuring a montage of the group singing the track featuring images/clips of Simone throughout various stages of her life.

Lighthouse is a touching tribute to G.R.L’s lost member, the group strongly delivered the lyrics with vocals so emotionally sung; you also can’t help but feel a sense of loss whilst listening, it also has you thinking about what you can do to be there for the ones you care about. Lighthouse shows us the humanity behind G.R.L, and Simone is sure to be looking down on her friends with pride and love.
