Album Review: OneRepublic – Artificial Paradise

2 min read

OneRepublic’s latest album, Artificial Paradise, marks a new evolution for the band, blending their pop-rock sound with electronic influences. The ambitious but varied project is the band’s sixth studio album.

Opening track, Artificial Paradise, provides a brief yet atmospheric introduction, offering an ethereal soundscape that hints at the albums themes of escapism and digital life. It’s a subtle but effective beginning. Hurt explores deeper waters of pain and resilience. The driving beat and haunting melody form the backdrop for  evocative vocals. It’s an intense, standout track but occasionally feels weighed down by its own earnestness.

Sink Or Swim is a high-energy anthem with an infectious chorus. The track’s pulsating rhythm and motivational lyrics make it a a quintessential OneRepublic song, blending pop sensibility with rock elements. While the message of perseverance and determination resonates, the song lacks any innovative touch.

Last Holiday introduces a mellow vibe and reflective lyrics. The instrumentation is rich and layered, complementing Tedder’s heartfelt delivery. I Ain’t Worried shifts gears with its upbeat and carefree energy. The feel-good moment blends catchy hooks with an infectious rhythm. Red Light Green Light is a short, punchy track that showcases the band’s versatility.

Serotonin explores the quest for happiness and balance. Dreamy production and introspective lyrics create a contemplative mood. It’s one of the more thought-provoking songs on the album. Singapore stands out with its exotic instrumentation and storytelling. The song paints a vivid picture of the titular city, blending traditional sounds with modern pop production. It’s an ambitious and refreshing track but risks feeling out of place within the album’s broader context.

The closing track, Room For You, is a heartfelt ballad. The vocals shine against a backdrop of gentle piano and strings. The song’s intimate lyrics and minimalist production provide a fitting end to the album.

Overall, Artificial Paradise showcases the bands willingness to explore new sounds and themes. While not every experiment hits the mark, the album’s highlights demonstrate the band’s enduring talent and evolution.
