September will see Foo Fighters release their ninth studio album; entitled Concrete and Gold, but until that time fans can keep themselves busy with the second single to be taken from the impending release; The Sky Is A Neighbourhood.
In the past, Foo Fighters have thrashed their way back to the centre of attention, yet this campaign finds a band finally acknowledging they don’t need to cause such a racket in order to sell records. Yes Taylor Hawkins’ drums are still riotous, but the growl of Grohl is considerably more restrained in the opening segments. The signature energy remains but this time things are taking a spookier turn, with blues led guitars steering the good ship Foo Fighters a little more towards the supernatural.
If we’re looking at this on a deep and commentariat level, the metaphor of “the sky is a neighbourhood, so keep it down” could relate to the shocking levels of global warming we’ve now all reached. If not, Growl and Co could have a future career in environmental activism whilst still making killer tunes.
The only issue with Foo Fighters in 2017 is they have been everywhere, done everything and had their iconic band phase relatively early in their career. Millions around the world still adore them, but until they can conceptualise a fully innovative sound they may struggle to maintain the strong pull that catapulted them to the tops of festival bills the world over.
