Album Review: The Dead Weather – Dodge And Burn

It’s been 5 long years since alternative super group The Dead Weather (Jack White, Alison Mosshart, Dean Fertita and Jack Lawrence) have treated us to their unique blend of sounds. Dodge And Burn is their third release as a group and their growing success has proved that they’re more than just a side project; they’re a dominant force to be reckoned with.
Dodge And Burn definitely shows the group have the ability to bend the genre of contemporary rock ‘n’ roll. It’s an album that really shows the creative license that went into creating it, these artists hold nothing back – it’s a fine look into the crazy world of rock. The Dollar Hat sees Jack White in full force as we enter a spoken word odyssey in this lyrically haunting track stating “I’m that bad man named Jackie lee – shooting everybody down with the 43”. Staring off with a simple beat and rhythm combo the track builds into one with a distorted melody, big drums that invoke a frantic energy full of repetitive riffs to amp up the track. While Rough Detective gives both White and Alison Mossharts vocals a stage to entrance us together as their voices blend and bounce off one another effortlessly. It’s a song with an upbeat tempo and a snappy beat and it really stands out against the slower tunes on Dodge And Burn.
Closing out this album is a track that contrasts the eerie, grunge inspired tracks of before. Impossible Winner is Mosshart through and through, her voice soars over a keyboard melody and a subtle string arrangement as she croons a personal tale. It’s a much warmer, more inviting track then the core material which inturn is an odd way to close out an album like this. But ultimately Dodge And Burn gives a glimpse into four talented minds that often incur dark thoughts, but they translate them into beautifully intricate tracks with true depth and grit.
