Album Review: Miley Cyrus – Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz

Fresh off her hosting gig at the 2015 VMA’s, controversial pop singer Miley Cyrus surprised the audience and her fans with a performance of her latest single Dooo It!, followed by the announcement that her new album Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz was available to stream for free. Is the world ready for some more Miley Cyrus, or are we still trying to recover from her 2013 reign? Only one way to find out, and that’s to give the whopping 23 tracks a listen.
Dead Petz is more of a side project for Cyrus, alongside lead producer Wayne Coyne of The Flaming Lips, as it has been excluded from her multi album contract with RCA. It’s not a multi-million dollar album: apparently it only cost approximately $50,000 to make, and at times it shows unfortunately. Dooo It! is almost the best track on the album, though if you’ve heard it (and hated it) you presumably may question that statement.
There are personal and emotional themes expressed by Cyrus on tracks like The Floyd Song (about her dead dog), Karen Don’t Be Sad and Evil Is But A Shadow, but if only the music could make these tracks shine brighter. 1 Sun is a stand out compared to the others, exhibiting as it does the singer’s passion for the Earth we live on, and it sounds decent too. Nonetheless, songs like Pablow The Blowfish ultimately don’t stick at all in the memory.
Miley Cyrus fans, please don’t expect a typical 45 minute album of boppy pop. If you’re into the Flaming Lips, experimental psychedelic/pop then Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz is for you. You would expect somebody who had creative control of their work to deliver something more solid, especially Miley Cyrus, but once again she’s proven all judgement of her wrong. This album could soon be forgotten about, even the stand out tracks struggled to be highlights. Though it’s possible one would get more enjoyment out of the record if they weren’t listening to it expecting a Bangerz sequel.
