Single Review: Pet Shop Boys – ‘The Pop Kids’
1 min readMasters of electronic tunes Pet Shop Boys, are back making funky grooves for their thirteenth album, with their latest single, The Pop Kids. Instantly enveloping you into their madness with the use of a euphoric electro beat with pulsing waves of synth, it’s a tune all about celebrating the virtue of young adulthood. Setting the tone, stating, “Remember those days – the early 90s?”
The rest of the tune is thrashing with vibrant energy, a vivid effervescence and its quirky vocals that roll in waves, droning, “They called us the Pop Kids, ‘cause we loved the pop hits” as an infectious chorus hook. But behind the animation of the exterior, there is a hidden sense of personal anguish, highlighted in the chorus, three simple words that hold so much meaning, “I loved you” said with a newfound sincerity amongst the playfulness of the rest of the track.
Ultimately The Pop Kids is the revived 90s throwback that music needed, it’s vibrant and refreshing with hints of pure emotion, and inherent narrative. The Pet Shop Boys revisit memory lane, reminding us all that “rock is overrated” as they spin an electronic wonderland.
