Single Review: Katy Perry – ‘Birthday’

1 min read

Following the string of massive hits off her 2013 album Prism (Roar, Unconditionally, Dark Horse), the newest single from Katy Perry is the 80s influenced disco track Birthday. The upbeat, modern disco tune is fun and flirty as the pop star plays around with metaphors about celebrating her partner’s birthday (“Let me get you in your birthday suit/It’s time to bring out the big balloons”).

Katy Perry BirthdayPerry recently unveiled the artwork for the single on Twitter, which sees a vintage photo of her and her sister as young’ns sitting in front of a birthday cake in matching floral dresses. The cover features Perry’s name spelled out in photo-shopped balloons as well as the word “birthday” spelled in candles. The innocent looking cover is contrasted by the sensual nature of the lyrics, which are lightened by the fun and dance-friendly backing music which makes it likely to be a popular mainstream pop hit.

It seems that Perry can do no wrong lately as each single from Prism has been of high quality and each just as good if not better than the one before it. This one is probably the catchiest and definitely the most light-hearted release from the record so far and is sure to be welcomed by fans and on dance-floors everywhere.
