Single Review: Coldplay – ‘Magic’

2 min read

Not since 2011 have we had an upcoming Coldplay album to be excited about – until now. The massive Mylo Xyloto was the band’s last release but the wait is soon to be over with Ghost Stories due out later this year. To make the wait more bearable, the London quartet unveiled the first taste of the album with Midnight last month, followed by the most recent single Magic.

Coldplay MagicWhile Midnight was quite different and experimental from the lads, Magic offers a more traditional Coldplay-esque sound. The new track also hints at a more electronic, modern direction, suggesting that the boys are willing to try mixing things up on the new album which will become their sixth.

Being careful not to stray too far from the Coldplay of the past, Magic places the main focus on front-man Chris Martin’s stunning vocals and the beautiful lyrics (“Call it magic, call it true/Call it magic/When I’m with you/I just got broken, broken into two/Still I call it magic/When I’m next to you”). The simple, mellow track is elegant and refined, showing a natural progression of sound as the band mix old and new styles to create a promising sneak peek at the upcoming album.

Magic is sure to excite fans as we anticipate the release of Ghost Stories. The distinctive Chris Martin vocals over a subdued but effective instrumental background delivers a classic Coldplay track which will likely be another huge radio hit for the iconic quartet and set the bar high for a magical (pun intended) new album.
