News: Bruno Mars’ Super Bowl Halftime Show Makes History

2 min read

(U.S) Bruno Mars made history last night with the most watched SUPER BOWL HALFTIME SHOW with a record breaking 115.3 million viewers. That figure surpasses the 110.8 million delivered by Beyonce last year and the prior record of 114.0 million set by Madonna two years ago. In addition, Mars made history last night as he took the stage as the youngest artist ever to serve as the sole NFL Super Bowl Halftime headliner. Mars’ performance drew the highest ratings of the game’s telecast.

The multi-platinum, multi- GRAMMY®-winning singer/songwriter/producer/musician opened the PEPSI SUPER BOWL XLVIII HALTIME SHOW with a rousing drum solo on a kit designed to honor his late mother, Bernadette Hernandez. The artwork was modeled after Bruno’s arm tattoo dedicated to his mom. Mars acted as musical director behind this epic performance, which included upbeat, energetic deliveries of multiple hits from his catalogue including “Locked Out Of Heaven,” “Treasure” and “Runaway Baby.”  The Red Hot Chili Peppers then took the stage to perform their unforgettable song “Give It Away,” as Bruno’s special guests. Mars invited the Red Hot Chili Peppers to join him on the Pepsi Super Bowl Half Time stage in August 2013, prior to being announced as the halftime performer. Mars said the Red Hot Chili Peppers were the first name he thought of to join him because they are a “soulful” band who are “passionate about creating music and performing.”

The historical halftime spectacular also included a special video package honoring men and women of the United States Armed Forces, capturing personalized messages for their loved ones.  Mars ended the performance with a powerful solo rendition of his GRAMMY® Award-winning No. 1 single “Just The Way You Are,” standing midfield, backed by the biggest firework display in NFL Super Bowl history.

Mars has seen an unprecedented spike in music sales immediately following his show stopping performance at all major retailers. Currently, certified double-platinum, UNORTHODOX JUKEBOX is back at #1 on the iTunes Overall Album chart while his debut DOO-WOPS & HOOLIGANS is at #3. In addition, Mars has 11 songs in the Top 100 on the iTunes Overall Singles chart with “Locked Out Of Heaven” at #6 and “Just The Way You Are” at #7. Both “Locked Out Of Heaven” and “Just The Way You Are” previously held the #1 positions on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart for 6 weeks and 4 weeks respectively.
