Single Review: Janelle Monae – ‘Tightrope’
2 min read
Tightrope is the new single for Kansas singer/songwritter Janelle Monae who is preparing for the release of her new blues, afro funk concept record The ArchAndroid later in the month. Tightrope is a taste of what’s to come and is due for release on Monday.
The single is an articulated slice of blues and funk with a packed chorus of soul singer wailing’s and beefy beat-happy rhythms.
Outkast star Big Boi is a quality addition to the track who lends his production expertise and tight rhyme dishings. The singer has been a follower of Outkast since her beginnings and the two pair perfectly on the single. Monae’s bouncy and poised delivery and old-school funk tones are nothing short of superb.
The Grammy Award nominee and ASCAP Vanguard Award winning soul diva was picked up by P Diddy’s label Bad Boy records and Tightrope is a joint venture between the label and the the singers own company, Wonderland Arts Society.
Tightrope is a top class single for a not so well known diva over here in the UK but with the eclecticism of mainstream music of late there is no doubt that this is one soul chick that will fit the mold of one of the genres next big things.
