Interview: Amy Steele

5 min read

With a couple of successful single releases over the past couple of years including the catchy hit Eyes On You which featured fellow musician Mario, London based songstress Amy Steele is quickly making a name for herself in the music industry with her fast growing fan-base around the world.

With a brand new single about to be released on December 14th in the form of The Wolves, Amy spent some time answering a few of our questions around the single release and her journey in the music industry so far. Here is what she had to tell us…

Brendon Veevers: Hi Amy, how are you and where in the world does our interview find you?

Amy Steele: Hi, I’m well thank-you! On the train into London for a band rehearsal!

Amy Steele The WolvesBV: You are preparing for the release of your brand new single, The Wolves which is to be released next week. Can you tell us a little bit about the track, it’s theme and the general style of the single?

AS: The Wolves is about being brave in a new relationship, it talks about the risk involved in being vulnerable and letting your guard down with someone, yet the inevitability of doing it anyway.

BV: Will there be an album on the horizon and if so, what can fans expect from the full length release?

AS: Yes, I’m working on the album right now! It has a theme of story telling, each song on it tells a full story. I’m really excited to put it out as my sound has become a lot more definite during the process, I’ve really enjoyed making it and I can’t wait for people to hear what we’ve been working on.

BV: You performed at the O2 Islington recently. How did the show go and how did fans take to the new songs?

AS: I was really nervous as it was my first headline show. But it went amazing. It was the first time playing a lot of the songs that were going to be on my album and the audience really warmed to it. I had such a good time, soon as I got off stage I was like I want to do that again!

BV: Are there any plans to perform anywhere else in 2014 or 2015 that we can look out for and where can fans keep up to date with your touring schedule?

AS: Yes, I’m going to be announcing a couple shows coming up. We’re planning a 2015 tour! All the info will be up on my facebook and twitter.

BV: What artists have been the most influential to you in your life?

AS: I’ve been influenced by so many different genres of music growing up, from rap to soul to pop. I don’t think I have specific artists that I can point to that moulded my style, I think it just comes down to a mixed appreciation of different music.

BV: You have collaborated with a few other artists over the past couple of years including Mario on your 2013 single Eyes On You. If you could pick any 3 artists to collaborate with in the future, who would you pick any why?

AS: That’s a really tough question. Can I have four? I think it would be between: Kendrick Lemar, James Fauntleroy, Drake and Craig Armstrong. Musically they’re all doing completely different things, I love it.

BV: Is it important for you to be involved in the whole creative process of your work – from song writing to producing and your image? How involved in this are you?

AS: Naturally I’m really hands on with everything to do with my music, because it’s really personal to me. But I also have an amazing team who really get the direction I want to go in so it’s a natural amalgamation of ideas. Team work makes the dream work!

BV: What would you say has been the biggest challenge about being a recording artist and being in the music industry?

AS: I love to sing so much and I think it’s a privilege to be able to make music and have people hear it, so I really enjoy being in the industry purely for that reason. I have a really supportive team behind me that help me in balancing all my commitments, but I think the hardest part is how much work and attention to detail a release requires in order to keep putting stuff out that you can be proud of.

BV: What advice would you give to someone hoping to break into the music industry?

AS: I think the most important thing is to figure out who you are as an artist, and what you want to say, everything else flows from that.

BV: We recently read that you are studying for a medical degree with hopes to become a doctor. Where will this place your musical career or are long-terms musical goals something you are still considering?

AS: Music is my heart; I’m always going to sing. I’d love to be able to combine the two. At some point I’d love to work with doctors without borders because I’d love to help treating people in less developed countries affected by basic diseases that shouldn’t be causing such devastation. I would also love to work with the UN and the World Health Organisation at some point in the future.

BV: What other plans are in the pipeline for 2014 that we can look forward to Amy?

AS: Some new remixes coming your way soon, an exciting new feature on The Wolves I worked on last week, and a couple more surprises I’ll be announcing on my socials soon!

Amy Steele’s new single The Wolves is out on December 14th in the UK.
