Album Review: Flo – Access All Areas
2 min readLittle Mix were the last UK group to truly capture the hearts and minds of audiences worldwide, but with their debut studio album, Access All Areas, FLO seems ready to surpass them effortlessly. Jorja Douglas, Renée Downer, and Stella Quaresma channel the essence of ’90s nostalgia while injecting a modern energy that feels perfectly in sync with the Match My Freak era.
The album kicks off with Intro, where Wicked star Cynthia Erivo sets the stage, declaring a need for “bad bitch replenishment.” It’s a bold and fitting opening that establishes FLO’s intent to not only honor the legacies of icons like Destiny’s Child and Sugababes but also to elevate the R&B girl group game to new heights. While the record pays homage to these influences, FLO confidently explores new sonic territory. Tracks like In My Bag, featuring American rapper GloRilla, deliver a hard-hitting trap vibe, while Nocturnal offers a melodic structure reminiscent of Destiny’s Child’s signature staccato delivery, with FLO putting their own distinctive spin on it.
Rather than focusing solely on heartbreak and toxic relationships, FLO brings attention to the positive side of love. Check is a playful celebration of solid partners, with a garage beat and a humorous checklist of traits (“Is he faithful? Check… Background Check”). Meanwhile, Bending My Rules is a tender and vulnerable ode to healthy compromise. The sultry AAA blends whispery vocals with fast hi-hats and snares, presenting intimacy through the lens of mutual respect. FLO makes their message clear on the title track: “If I give you everything, it better means everything, not just anything.” It’s a refreshing perspective, underpinned by confidence and empowerment.
The album’s versatility is another standout feature, balancing high-energy tracks with softer, introspective moments. Soft slows things down with a lush, reflective soundscape, while Trustworthy evokes a Frank Ocean-esque atmosphere with its mesmerising melodies and stripped-back production. MNEK, a producer known for his work with Beyoncé, Dua Lipa, and Little Mix, expertly crafts a cohesive album that allows FLO’s vocal chemistry to shine while showcasing their range. With Access All Areas,
FLO proves they have the talent, charisma, and star power to redefine the modern girl group. They’ve mastered the art of tapping into nostalgia without losing their contemporary edge, and their momentum over the past two years suggests they’re on the brink of a game-changing breakthrough. While this album alone might not single-handedly bring back the dominance of R&B girl groups, FLO’s rise hints at a cultural shift waiting to happen—and they’re ready to lead the charge.
