Single Review: Charli XCX – ‘Superlove’

2 min read

In the current music market, which is oversaturated with the next bout of youngsters striving to be the next big thing, leaving it just that little bit too long between material can be career suicide (La Roux, anyone?). With that factor in mind however, nobody can accuse Charli XCX of taking her time when it comes to her musical output; so far in 2013 she has released two singles, a duet with Marina and the Diamonds, an album and was the force responsible for the international mega-hit I Love It which shot Swedish dance duo, Icona Pop, to the upper echelons of chart success around the world.

Charli XCX - SuperloveAs evidenced by I Love It, Charli XCX is more than capable of penning a catchy pop song, and her latest single, Superlove, continues in this vein. Penned somewhere between her relentless touring schedule and stated to be the first single from her forthcoming, as of yet, unannounced second album, Superlove takes the chunky, offbeat synth-pop of her debut album True Romance and processes it through a musical blender, streamlining it and making it into an easily digestible slice of bubbly electronica. It is a ready-made radio hit – which is by no means a slight against the Brit-pop songstress! – and it easily her smoothest and most easily accessible release to date.

Superlove is delectable and instantly loveable, and bodes well for a speedier release of XCX’s second album (True Romance was delayed by a whole year). With Charli XCX’s profile as a pop-force to reckon with rising by the minute, Superlove proves to be straight-up pop at its best. Latch onto it now, it’s time to get hooked!
