Single Review: Jessica Mauboy – ‘Can I Get A Moment?’

Over the past 12 months pop princess Jessica Mauboy has been very busy. She released her third studio album, became the first Australian to sing at the Eurovision Song Contest and performed at the Closing Ceremony of the Commonwealth Games, held in Glasgow earlier this year.
Now, after this greatly successful year, the Australian pop and R&B star is set to showcase her brand new single, Can I Get A Moment?, ahead of the release of her upcoming fourth album.
Co-written with legendary American producer, Kenneth ‘Babyface’ Edmonds, who has created hits for the likes of Beyoncé, Whitney Houston, Madonna, Michael Jackson and Mauboy’s own professed idol, Mariah Carey (to name a few), it has been suggested that Can I Get A Moment? might be Jessica Mauboy’s key for tapping into the American pop audience.
While this track is a fresh and new sound for the young singer, whether or not it has what it takes to break through to the US demographic is questionable.
Heavy on percussion, with solid beats and handclaps, the single is up-tempo and catchy in its easy-to-follow repetition, however the Blurred Lines style backing vocals seem a little unoriginal. What really carry this track are Jessica’s impressive vocals.
Often referred to as Australia’s answer to Beyoncé, Mauboy’s voice is definitely the most redeeming feature of the single, however it seems more suited to a Christina Aguilera comparison than a Beyoncé one, with multiple vocal runs and embellishments throughout.
While Jessica Mauboy’s vocal talent definitely seems deserving of international acclaim, it will be interesting to see if Can I Get A Moment? is enough to capture the attention of US audiences, or if they need something more substantial.
