Single Review: Birdy – ‘Wings’

2 min read

While women are currently dominating the pop airwaves, it is unfortunate that many female musicians succumb to the powers that be and rely on sex to sell their art. Fortunately, all hope is not yet lost with England’s Birdy making her presence known on radio frequencies.

BirdyFireWithinBirdy first came to fame after winning the UKs “Open Mic” competition in 2008 at the age of 12. Shortly afterwards, she released her first single in the form of a cover of Bon Iver’s Skinny Love. Her haunting rendition found acclaim around the world and lead to her first album being released just two years ago.

Now, at the age of 17, Birdy has returned with the new single Wings from her forthcoming album Fire Within. The amount of prowess Birdy houses within her voice is truly astounding. She may still be younger than a great deal of pop stars today, but the sound of Wings is nothing short of mature and spellbinding.

It doesn’t seem possible that she’s only 17. Birdy has managed to create a truly compelling and emotional pop song without making any use of common tropes found in today’s pop music. There are no references to clubbing, alcohol, or sex here. Instead, Birdy makes use of a raw talent and brings it to light with emotive lyrics without ever making it come across as redundant.

Wings is a song that will get stuck in your head and you’ll be happy to have it there. You’re going to be hearing a lot from this young woman in the months to come. Wings stands confidently on its own, yet makes Fire Within a hotly anticipated album. Birdy is a musician in every sense of the word and will hopefully be able to outshine her competitors in the coming months with her quaint yet substantial presence.
