Single Review: The Veronicas – ‘In My Blood’

In My Blood, the new single from The Veronicas, sees them abandoning any pretence of the “punk” section of their traditionally pop-punk sensibilities. The track is a 2016 pop song through-and-through, from the throbbing synth bass, to the 4/4 kick drum, or the chopped up, robotic chorus. What sets it apart from most contemporary pop songs is the sheer level of woozy emotion the duo manages to project. From the first line of vocals, the song drips feeling and romance, and forms a new high water-mark for the duo.
The verses feel typically sensual, with lyrics about lust and desire: “now you got me wanting more / I felt religion with you on the floor”. However, the the pre-chorus takes an uncharacteristically sweet turn, as the beat drops out and the duo wistfully sing “we don’t have to wait all night / to know if this is really love”. It’s a lovely moment, and it helps to lend the more standard chorus (comprised of a “in my blood ah-ah-ah” chopped up refrain) a sense of tenderness that elevates it beyond its ingredients.
The Veronicas have made the most of their genre’s formula with In My Blood, and have crafted a legitimately great pop song.
