Single Review: The Veronicas – ‘Cruel’

2 min read

Australia’s twins of pop The Veronicas disappeared for a little while since the release of their second studio album Hook Me Up, but late last year they returned with their latest self-titled release; which was much to the delight of their fans, all of whom had been waiting seven years for new material. The new album’s lead single You Ruin Me debuted at number one on the ARIA charts in September, and most recently its second single If You Love Someone has been relentlessly played on mainstream radio, now the duo have released its third single; Cruel.

The VeronicasThe Veronicas have managed to successfully continue where they left off, with their catchy pop hooks and their infectious arrangements, not to mention their beautiful voices; Cruel has a memorable riff, which kicks the song off with the vocals, but it’s not long before the boppy drum beat joins the party. Thus far each single from The Veronicas has been about the troubles surrounding love and relationships, Cruel also falls into that category but is definitely the most catchy and upbeat of the trio; a good selling point in pop music has always been a failed or stalled relationship, take Taylor Swift and Sam Smith for current examples, The Veronicas are channeling this route in songwriting to a tee.

All in all, Cruel should be a decent radio hit for 2015, it sells itself really with its seemingly endless supply of energy and its relatable lyrics. We’re still waiting on The Veronicas to release a new single that strays from the topic of love, but they’re doing a great job regardless; any new material from this pair is material enough, Cruel is sure to be kind to your ears and your playlists.
