Single Review: Fergie – ‘M.I.L.F. $’

It has been two years since Fergie has released a single and the Duchess is back, unapologetic and louder than ever, with a new track called M.I.L.F $ (pronounced ‘Milf Money’) that makes her last release L.A. Love (La La) seem like it would be best suited for a ‘smooth’ radio station. It was produced by Polow Da Don who has worked with a host of hip-hop and pop artists, Nicki Minaj, Nelly, Christina Aguilera, Rihanna, Usher…, and took three years to make. M.I.L.F. $ is released in anticipation of Fergie’s second studio album Double Duchess which is due for release later this year.
The purpose of the song is to challenge the social convention of the wholesome role a mother typically plays in society. I’m sure this track will become an anthem for many women out there who want to show that they can have it all; a family, a career, a social life and be sexy as hell at the same time. For those whose mantra is “work hard, play hard” you’ll get what Fergie is saying. A mother herself, to her three year old son, Axl, with husband Josh Duhamel, her message is authentic as she aggressively reminds us that she is still I.N.D.E.P.E.N.D.E.N.T. and P.A.I.D. – incidentally she was a spelling bee champion in her childhood which explains her affinity for spelling these words out in M.I.L.F. $. This single is one that has divided public opinion, you either like it or you don’t. I think the angst and message will resonate with Fergie’s fans, but the music does become tiresome after a while. It’s a great track for hitting the gym or the clubs because it is so driving, but it probably won’t be a classic hit that people will listen to in years to come. Like a lot of Fergie’s music, it will be swiftly forgotten after the hype, but it was damn fun while it lasted.
