Film Review: The Uninvited

2 min read

Snapshot Review: The film centres around a sordid and deceitful Hollywood party. We see fragile relationships torn apart, old flames rekindled and obnoxious men perpetuate their delusions. Yet the arrival of an unknown elderly woman disrupts these delusions as she exposes the selfish and ridiculous behaviour of these highfalutin, Hollywood, party-goers. The party ultimately forces these characters to reflect on past mistakes, bad behaviours and maybe even the finite nature of life.

White Lotus star and man of the moment: Walton Goggins produces a solid performance as the tortured romantic while being a power hungry, career shark. Pedro Pascal is as charismatic as ever and Elizabeth Reaser portrays the tragedy of motherhood with strong assurance.

Nonetheless, the writing often oozes with cliche which makes it difficult to care at all about any of the characters. Despite being awful people, there is a sense that we have to unbiasedly offer our sympathies to these despicable humans. Helen, played by Lois Smith babbles away, apparently communicating some deep, complex truths on the finite nature of life. Yet, at times her presence seems unnecessary, unwarranted and an overall distraction from the more interesting parts of the film.

As the films storylines progressed, characters and ideas appeared and reappeared without any thought or narrative logic. It all just seemed like quite a directionless piece of filmmaking. Lots of these deficiencies are difficult to overlook which make this a very below average, baseless film that might just leave a bad taste in your mouth.
