Film Review- Superman
2 min read
Superman, DC Studios’ first feature film to hit the big screen, is set to soar into theaters worldwide this summer from Warner Bros. Pictures. In his signature style, James Gunn takes on the original superhero in the newly imagined DC universe with a singular blend of epic action, humor and heart, delivering a Superman who’s driven by compassion and an inherent belief in the goodness of humankind. - Warner Bros UK
Snapshot Review: The highly anticipated James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy) written and directed reboot of Superman accomplishes it’s clear mission to broaden the DC universe, probably to it’s own determent. Ditching the dark gloominess of the Zack Snyder/Christopher Nolan interpretations, it goes for a brighter, more classic and cartoonier style with mixed results. Forgoing any of the childhood backstory, Superman starts off right in the middle of the action, giving it the distinct feeling you are watching a sequel.
The bloated storyline where Superman is only one of many superhumans introduces many other superheroes as well as super-villians with very little character development and comes off much more like a Marvel film. Very sci-fi heavy, there is a lot going on, which will probably please die-hard comic fans but leave the rest of us exhausted. Performances are good including David Corenswet, though he doesn’t achieve the heights of both strength and vulnerability that Christopher Reeve did. Nicholas Hoult is especially good as Lex Luthor, but the few scenes with Superman’s parents are irritating- they come off as annoying stereoptypes.
The film does use some of the amazing score written by John Williams from the original 1978 film, but not nearly as effectively as it could have. There are a few funny moments, particularly with Superman’s dog Krypto (thanks to very well done cgi), and his team of automotons working for him in the Fortress of Solitude. Otherwise, the laughs fail to gain much traction. Leaving lots of room for spinoffs and sequels, Superman is enjoyable enough for fans of the modern superhero genre but is weighed down by trying to achieve too much.
