Film Review: Juror #2

2 min read

‘Juror #2” follows family man Justin Kemp (Hoult) who, while serving as a juror in a high profile murder trial, finds himself struggling with a serious moral dilemma…one he could use to sway the jury verdict and potentially convict—or free—the accused killer. Academy Award winner Eastwood directs from a screenplay by Jonathan Abrams (“Escape Plan”). The film is produced by Eastwood, Tim Moore, Jessica Meier, Adam Goodman and Matt Skiena, and executive produced by David M. Bernstein, Ellen Goldsmith-Vein, Jeremy Bell.’– Warner Bros. Pictures.

Snapshot Review: Director Clint Eastwood returns with a classic courtroom drama. Yet, there is moral twist! Nicholas Hoult plays Kemp, who is Juror #2 on a homicide trial. Right from the get go, Kemp realises he is tragically implicated in the case leaving him to grapple with a mind bending ethical conundrum. This is where the wonderful Toni Colette comes in as the hard nailed prosecutor with political aspirations. Both these characters find themselves questioning what are the sacrifices of truth and justice. How do we balance our own lives against doing the right thing? Eastwood cleverly turns these questions on the juror and by extension the audience. The ending puts us face to face with how our mistakes can follow us for the rest of our lives.

Eastwood is brilliant at delivering quite a complex story in a simple and eloquent way. He creates strong and simple images to keep the audience constantly engaged. Unfortunately, there are times when the story runs out of steam and some of the judicial scenes can become quite generic. Nonetheless, this courtroom drama tells a complex story in a simple and engaging way!
