“Trying to leave their troubled lives behind, twin brothers (Jordan) return to their hometown to start again, only to discover that an even greater evil is waiting to welcome them back.” – Warner Bros UK

Snapshot Review: Ryan Coogler is back with a sizzling, mind-blowing bang! Coogler masterfully dazzles with the vampire genre to take the audience on a playful journey through history, time and space. Set in 1930s Mississippi, the story begins at the end with Miles (Sammie Moore) entering through a church door with a broken guitar and a vicious scar slashed across his face. We then go back a day earlier where we find Miles meeting up with his criminal twin cousins: ‘Smoke’ and ‘Stack’, who have fled the Chicago gang scene to start a juke joint in the town where they grew up. The twins recruit Miles and some other local talent to play the music for the opening night of the juke joint. It is all going swimmingly until a trio of suspiciously friendly, white country musicians ask to come and join the party. From here chaos ensues and the night’s proceedings turn into a frantic, violent bloodbath.

Along the way, Coogler cleverly references the cultural movement of afrofuturism and visualises this in such a spectacular way. The music throughout is utterly enchanting, giving the film such electric and dynamic energy. This energy is completely matched with Michael B. Jordan’s double performance of the twins. Jordan is so confidently assured and holds all the film’s competing conflicts with alluring ease. The film is sexy, it’s scary, and a seductive, delicious treat. Definitely the most nourishing film of the year so far!
