Film Review: Nightbitch

Snapshot Review: Marielle Heller returns with a fascinating take on the perils of motherhood. Originally a hit novel written by Rachel Yoder, the story explores the trials and tribulations of being a parent. Heller has teamed up with Amy Adams who delivers a truthful performance that showcases her comedic range. From the get go, the banalities of being a full time parent are established. Maybe having a child is not such a good idea. On becoming a mother, our central character loses her hobbies, opinions, and interests. The film does not shy away from the violence of pregnancy and the drastic emotional and physical effects it has on a woman’s body.
Heller adopts an alternative route by transforming the mother into a dog. This reminds us that humans are just animals with basic needs and desires. The symbol of the roaming dog represents freedom and complete escape. Yet we eventually realise, being a ‘Nightbitch’ is an all encompassing philosophy that encapsulates both parent and child, past and present.
The film does have its drawbacks as the constant voice over creates at times a touch of cliche. The cinematography is uninspiring and some ideas do not fully develop. Nonetheless, it offers a different and daring message in a creatively alternative way. This film, which is far from perfect, is definitely essential viewing as it is unashamedly honest in its portrayal of motherhood.
