Film Review: Moana 2
2 min read“Moana 2 reunites Moana and Maui three years later for an expansive new voyage alongside a crew of unlikely seafarers. After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced.” – Disney UK
Snapshot Review: Moana is back and once again is tasked with saving her beloved homeland ‘Montunui’. A bolt of lightening strikes Moana alerting her of a devastating prophecy. The stakes are greater, the waves are bigger, and there seems to be so much more to lose. The future of Polynesian region rests on her shoulders. Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson’s ‘Maui’ makes a playful return whereby his Demi-God status delights viewers. Moana has a new crew to aid her on this daring quest. Their mission leads them face to face with a monstrous God of a storm! Can they survive the unsurvivable?
Reentering the magical world of Moana will always be enchanting yet there a definite shortcomings to this sequel. Firstly, Lin Manuel Miranda’s departure from the franchise is clearly evident. The songs simply fail to inspire the same level of joy and memorability as the previous film. The plot is incoherent at times as the story jumps around awkwardly without limited explanation. There is sense the directors are trying to replicate the success of the first Moana by repeating the same story but on a larger scale. Did we really need this sequel? Does this add anything to world of the Moana? Unfortunately, the answer is a resounding no. Moana 2 unfortunately will fall into the abyss alongside Incredibles 2 and other forgettable yet iconic animation sequels.
