Film Review: Jurassic World- Rebirth

The Mosasaurus and Spinosauruses in JURASSIC WORLD REBIRTH, directed by Gareth Edwards.
“Five years post-Jurassic World: Dominion (2022), an expedition braves isolated equatorial regions to extract DNA from three massive prehistoric creatures for a groundbreaking medical breakthrough.”
Snapshot Review: Jurassic World- Rebirth is the seventh film overall in the Jurassic franchise and the fourth in the Jurassic World series after 2022’s Dominion. Scarlett Johansson plays Zora, a spy for hire who is recruited by a scientist to assemble a team and travel to a forbidden island where dinosaurs still roam and collect samples from the 3 largest species (land, sea and air) to make a life-saving drug. Unknown to them, the island harbours an experiment gone wrong that escaped from a secret development program years earlier. It’s a very basic premise that isn’t particularly novel to the either the Jurassic franchise, or films in general.
The disappointing script uses some very silly ‘science’ to try and explain away some obvious plot holes, and there is almost no character development or backstory. What unfolds is highly predictable, and in many scenes…very familiar. Annoyingly, too many scenes are blatantly referenced from previous Jurassic films, and overall, it comes off as a mishmash of previous films in the series and genre in general. Even more disappointing are the landscapes, which seem washed out and two dimensional.
There are a few bright spots though- some of the action scenes are exciting, and in a few cases the visual effects are stunning. Most notable is a river scene where the cast is being pursued by a T-Rex, and the special effects of the T-Rex in the water are incredible. Also, we finally get to see a dinosaur gobble a person whole…very satisfying. Overall, the film is weighed down heavily by its predictable story and recycled scenes, putting it in the middle of the pack in the series.
