Film Review: DEEP COVER

Snapshot Review: Having it’s world premier at SXSW London, DEEP COVER by Amazon Studios is a comedic take on the gangland genre with a twist: the main gangsters are not actually gangsters, but improv actors only pretending to be gangsters. Though it sounds a bit farcical (and at times it is), due to a very good script and talented cast, it actually works quite well. Leaning into the key proviso of improv acting to ‘always say yes’, the story is actually full of surprises and most importantly, lots of laughs. Led by Bruce Dallas Howard, she gives a very competent performance, and Nick Mohammed, though his character is a little thin, has some of the funniest moments. Most surprisingly though is Orlando Bloom, who not known for comedy, is fantastic with his ‘character within a character’ role. With a good balance of action, comedy, and some very tense moments, DEEP COVER is an entertaining ride. You can catch it on streaming platform Amazon Prime Video.
