EP Review: Zara Larsson – Uncover

2 min read

Zara Larsson is a trend setter in her home town of Sweden for all the right reasons. The 17 year old Scandinavian songstress was hard to ignore when she won her home country’s version of Got Talent at the delicate age of 10 years old. Now, seven years later, Zara has made headlines again and this time – for wrapping her leg in a condom.

Zara Larsson UncoverYes you read that correctly. The young pop star made a strong statement against men that pressure women for unprotected sex buy stretching the Durex up to her knee with the caption “To all the guys saying ‘My dick is too big for condoms’ TAKE A SEAT.” This officially makes Zara the coolest 17 year old on the planet, in my opinion anyway, and I’m happy to say it’s not just her feminist philosophies that get my praise.

Zara’s newly released EP, titled Uncover is actually quite fantastic. We’ve always known this girl had talent, but after taking some time off to you know, grow up, it was hard to predict the direction she would take musically. Uncover gives the wider world a wonderful sampling of the tracks that have made the most impact at home, and have all the potential to take it by storm.

Kicking off with laid-back, mid-tempo track Wanna Be Your Baby, Zara throws us back to some of Mariah Carey’s peppier stuff, move quickly to Never Gonna Die which you would be forgiven for mistaking for Rihanna. Title track Uncover is the pretty ballad of the bunch, while Carry You Home is exceptionally current and unique. The echoey She’s Not Me is the closest we get to cliche, saved by Zara’s stunning vocal performance, while the closing Rooftop is the nicest way to round off the EP, sounding like something from Taylor Swift’s 1989.

Uncover is an EP I’ll be adding to my playlist for a while, I can’t see myself getting sick of it any time soon. Mariah Carey, Rihanna, Taylor Swift – Zara is in good company with her song stylings and for the first time I think Robyn might need more than just a Durex to protect her from having her Queen of Swedish Pop crown stolen.
