Album Review: Jason Aldean – They Don’t Know

Jason Aldean has an impressive music track record with 24 singles released (15 of which have reach #1 on the relevant country charts) and They Don’t Know being his seventh studio album. For this release, Aldean went for a ‘bigger’ sound and there are certainly some big sounding country-rock tracks that would surely please a big crowd. Aldean knows how to satisfy the ears of his fans with his engaging story-telling style, rich country voice and singable melodies.
Overall the album seems one dimensional, Aldean rarely moving off the beaten path of the country music formula. The good numbers on the album are diluted by the ‘filler’ songs that all sound too similar. Some of the outstanding songs include: Lights Come On which was added at the last moment after Aldean had recorded all the tracks for the album. He received an email from his friends Tyler Hubbard and Brian Kelley who pitched this song to him. It is a solid opening track to the album. Comin’ In Hot is a fun upbeat track with driving guitars. First Time Again features Kelsea Ballerini, and the harmony of their smooth voices is just sublime. Bad is a track in which Aldean has demonstrated more creativity in the two main contrasting section of the song, it made for an interesting listen. In The Way A Night Should Feel he tells a captivating story and the guitar driven sound gives the music a bit of an edge.
Perhaps with a little more discerning selection of the 15 tracks, They Don’t Know would have benefited from being more concise, highlighting the songs in which Aldean has demonstrate more creativity and a distinguishable sound.
