Album Review: Janet Jackson – Unbreakable

Superstar Janet Jackson may have had seven years off from writing new material, but that didn’t stop her from being one busy lady after wrapping up her Number Ones, Up Close And Personal tour in 2011. Janet reunited with her production ‘dream team’ (Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis) for the release of her eleventh studio album Unbreakable, releasing it independently through her own label Rhythm Nation Records, so it will be interesting to hear where the music royal is sonically heading.
Jackson has not lost her charm. With driving RnB club hits (BURNITUP! feat. Missy Elliot), lusciously heartfelt piano ballads (After You Fall) and the smooth, airy lead single No Sleeep feat. J Cole, Unbreakable has shaped up to be an intriguing listen. The soulful Gon’ B Alright also deserves a mention due to its addictive beat and memorable melody.
Janet proves to be a true romantic in 2 B Loved, an upbeat wooing of her partner with her femininity making the invitation almost irresistible. Broken Hearts Heal gives you a moment to smile and appreciate Jackson’s humanity: the song is a lifting tribute to her late brother Michael. At 17 tracks long there is so much to appreciate about Unbreakable.
Unbreakable is proof that Jackson can still leave her mark after 30 years on the charts. These songs are clearly crafted to be taken on by Jackson alone, and she can thank her production ‘dream team’ for that. Hardcore fans will definitely enjoy the new material and can finally add some new Janet Jackson to their ever expanding collection.
