Film Review: Scream 7

2 min read

When a new Ghostface killer emerges in the quiet town where Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) has built a new life, her darkest fears are realized as her daughter (Isabel May) becomes the next target. Determined to protect her family, Sidney must face the horrors of her past to put an end to the bloodshed once and for all. – Paramount Pictures.

Snapshot Review: For director Kevin Williamson’s first foray in the chair since the late 90s, Scream 7 is an obvious but fun experience. With Neve Campbell returning as OG final girl Sidney Prescott, as well as the welcome return of everyone’s favourite reporter Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox), the scene was truly set for a generational battle, as Sidney’s daughter Tatum (Isabel May) comes face to face with her mother’s dark and bloody past.

The expected cold opening has to be one of the franchise’s best, despite its simplicity, and returning to a suburban setting gives the film an automatic sense of nostalgia without feeling like bait. The same cannot be said for some of the other surprises, but overall the film tries to land on its own merits. At times it feels bogged down by the extended lore, newer returning regulars doing little to enhance the plot, and the on-the-nose references to the past films and the horror genre as a whole feel tiresome.

That being said, there’s creative kills, genuinely good twists, and intelligently executed suspense scenes, all culminating in a lack-lustre ending that feels generic, but caps off a fun and entertaining watch.
