2 min read

Based on the bestselling book, REGRETTING YOU introduces audiences to Morgan Grant (Allison Williams) and her daughter Clara (Mckenna Grace) as they explore what’s left behind after a devastating accident reveals a shocking betrayal and forces them to confront family secrets, redefine love, and rediscover each other. REGRETTING YOU is a story of growth, resilience, and self-discovery in the aftermath of tragedy. – Paramount Pictures

Snapshot Review: Regretting You is Josh Boone’s latest Romantic Drama. Boone also directed The Fault in Our Stars which is a heartfelt love story laced with tragedy. His latest film essentially picks up his continuing preoccupation with the devastating consequences of love. The film begins with a high school flashback where Morgan has found out she is pregnant. Unfortunately, we know right from the beginning she is not in love with her boyfriend (eventual husband Chris) and instead has a greater connection with Jonah who is dating Jenny (Morgan’s sister). Flash forward 17 years later and it gets even more complicated. Clara, Morgan’s now 17 year old teenager, is in the middle of a family that are inextricably linked together through toxic love ties. It gets even more shocking when Chris and Jenny die in a car accident, which ultimately exposes their affair. Jonah and Morgan now have to come to terms with their spouses infidelity while also rueing how they might have ‘got it wrong’ all those years ago. At the same time, Clara falls for Miller, a classic American boy who looks after his gramps, doesn’t smoke, and is always obnoxiously sucking on a lollypop.

The film seems to have fun with these scandalous events, even using a schmaltzy tone to try to pretend this is a wholesome romantic drama where boy meets girl and long lost lovers finally reconnect. With the news cycles caught in a neverending loop of impending doom, catastrophic events and political strife, Hollywood has decided it is just the time to serve up this vapidly escapist but cute romantic drama. It’s obviously ridiculous and if not taken seriously at all, viewers will undoubtedly delight in the outlandish plot twists, and sappy romantic ploys.
