Last night at 2:17 am every child from Mrs. Gandy’s class woke up, got out of bed, went downstairs, opened the front door, walked into the dark …and they never came back.- Warner Brothers
Snapshot Review: Fresh of the success of Barbarian, Zach Cregger wrote and directed Weapons, which tells the story of teacher Justine (Julia Garner), whose class of children (except one) failed to show up at school one day after disappearing in the night. Naturally, tensions rise in the community as they turn their suspicions towards Justine who starts digging for answers herself. She reluctantly teams up with one of the missing children’s father Archer (Josh Brolin), and together they work to uncover the frightening truth of what happened to the children.
To move the story along, Cregger uses an interesting mechanism of switching between perspectives of different characters and it works really well. Feeding the audience clues in little bits and pieces, Weapons is mysterious and tense, with sudden bursts of insanity that is delightfully unnerving. Acting talent is top notch, with Julia Garner, Josh Brolin and Alden Ehrenreich all giving outstanding performances, but most noteworthy is Amy Madigan’s fantastic performance as the eccentric and creepy Aunt Gladys.
At times both equally hilarious and down right unhinged, it drip feeds answers to the audience bit by bit until the final chaotic conclusion that (mostly) answers all the questions. Weapons is a fun, tense horror thriller that will have you squirming in your seat. Weapons is a must see for every horror fan!
