Single Review: Gwen Stefani – ‘Used To Love You’

1 min read

This time last year Gwen Stefani fans were buzzing as the pop fashionista began rolling out new solo singles. The deal-breaking Baby Don’t Lie was soon followed by the boppy Pharrell co-written number Spark The Fire: but the singer soon went quiet again. She stated in a recent interview at the Mastercard Priceless Surprises press event that she went back to the drawing board to create something more honest.

Gwen Stefani - Used To Love YouStefani’s songwriting as a solo artist and with No Doubt has always been at its best when her personal life was in turmoil: not that we would wish that on anybody. Used To Love You is a heart-wrenching synth-pop ballad and hit the airwaves just two months after she filed for divorce from Gavin Rossdale. Every lyric and every note are sung with heart and the chorus just gets you: “I don’t know why I cry/But I think it’s ’cause I remember for the first time/Since I hated you/That I used to love you”.

Used To Love You definitely has one up on the two previous singles and is more honest and real. It will be interesting to hear where Gwen will go with her follow-up album to 2006’s The Sweet Escape. So far we haven’t been disappointed.
