EP Review: The Coronas – How This Goes

Irish rock group The Coronas have been on the scene for over a decade now, exciting fans and listeners alike with every release since their debut album Heroes or Ghosts in 2007. Their second album Tony Was An Ex-Con won Best Album at the 2010 Meteor Awards, beating bands like U2 and Snow Patrol. After the release of their third album in 2011, extensive touring and the recent release of their fourth album The Long Way last year, The Coronas are back again with their How This Goes EP, and we can’t wait to get into it!
Lead single and title track How This Goes is exciting, it has the essence of a modern Matchbox Twenty song and belongs on mainstream and indie radio stations alike. The group unite with fellow Dublin act Hudson Taylor for the soothing ballad Just The Right Time; the duo contribute with luscious harmonies thus allowing the track to touch your soul. Speak My Mind would also make for great single material. Its subtle yet passionate drums drive the chorus into an eerie abyss, just before returning as strong as ever. To wrap up the EP the group included two live tracks, each featured on their most previous album; Just Like That excited the crowd as much as it did the ears, proving that the group are a band to see as well as listen to, and lastly What A Love is just as energetic and exciting.
It’s not very difficult to appreciate the work of The Coronas, and although their How This Goes EP was short and sweet it still leaves an imprint. It would have been more of an experience if one or both of the live tracks had been new songs, but no matter, we got to take a piece of the group’s renowned live persona home with us to enjoy. From their knack for storytelling, mastery of arrangement to their thick Irish accent, The Coronas are fantastic and hopefully this EP is a sign of more to come.
