Album Review: Alison Moyet – Minutes and Seconds (Live)

With a career that has spanned over 30 years and has been dotted with not just success as a solo artist but also as part of the hugely successful synth-pop duo, Yazoo as well as acclaimed performances on the stages of the West End, Alison Moyet’s recent career resurgence hit a new stride in 2013 following the release of the impeccable studio album, the minutes. The record, Moyet’s 8th effort to date as a world renowned solo icon, produced several of 2013’s signature singles such as the lead track, When I Was Your Girl.
In September 2013, following the release of the minutes, Moyet took the LP around the UK, performing an initial 24 dates and delivering songs from the new record as well as hits from her enormously successful solo career and tracks from her time as part of Yazoo. Fast forward a year and she is now preparing to release a brand new live record which showcases the finest moments of that tour.
Minutes and Seconds is the new live collection from the singer who is known for some of the 80’s most successful hit singles including Invisible, All Cried Out, Is This Love? and Love Resurrection and of course for being the owner of one of music’s most distinctive, bass-heavy voices.
The tracklisting showcased some of the biggest performances from the tour and covers all of Moyet’s musical escapades from the last 30 years. From new pennings like Remind Yourself, Changeling and the minutes‘ opening number, Horizon Flame through to early solo achievements including Is This Love? and All Cried Out, the record presents a varied set-list that will please fans who caught the tour and serve them with a beautiful memory of these shows and also make those of us who weren’t able to catch these gigs rather jealous.
Recent hits like the minutes lead single When I Was Your Girl sit very confidently and comfortably beside early solo career highlights as well as the hits that made Alison Moyet a household name during her time in Yazoo with Vince Clarke in the 80’s with Only You and Situation injecting some 80’s synth-pop nostalgia into the setlist; Moyet delivering the songs with recording quality vocal finesse, precision and power.
The only fault of this release is that I found it unfortunate that the collection wasn’t presented as a 2-disc set so that all of the tracks performed on tour could be captured. While the average show featured 22 songs, the live album contains only 13 of those which is a shame. This means that several career highlights such as Love Resurrection and Yazoo hits like Nobody’s Diary and Don’t Go have been omitted from the release. Despite this however, the collection is full of the finest moments from within the tour and centres in on Alison’s most appraised song choices and career notables. This really is a exceptional live release from a truly exceptional musician!
