With Christmas almost upon us, we take a look back at some of our favorite Christmas and festive-themed films.

Join us as we count down the Top 10 films that help us at Renowned For Sound get into the Christmas spirit each year.

10. Jingle All The Way

During Schwarzenegger’s family friendly career days, this is a guilty pleasure gem of epic proportions. Yes, it gets carried away at the climatic end but if you are looking for a film that has every Christmas cliche in toe, than you should look no further.

9. The Family Stone

Definitely a film that has flown under the raider by many audiences. A bittersweet comedy that ticks all the right boxes and will leave you emptying boxes of Kleenex. High in emotion and Christmas spirit.

8. National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation

This is one of the National Lampoon franchises greatest assets and an Xmas classic. The 89′ festive comedy teamed up Lampoon cast staples Chevy Chase and Beverly D’Angelo with Juliette Lewis and Randy Quaid and saw the Griswold family going through a myriad of comedic drenched dilemmas leading up to Christmas Day. There are quite a few famous faces dotted throughout the film also including Big Bang Theory star Johnny Galecki playing Rusty.

7. Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas

The Grinch may not be visionary director Ron Howard’s finest work but what it lacks in direction it makes up for in enjoyment. Seeing Dr Suess’s Christmas extravaganza brought to life on screen with comedic talents of Jim Carrey as the Grinch is well worth the view.

6. Love Actually

A hilarious and heart felt comedy set in London, following the lives of countless individuals during the holiday season. The excellent cast ensemble in addition to touching heart felt moments is a definite must see and puts films like Valentine’s Day to shame.

5. The Muppet Christmas Carol

Anyone who says they don’t love The Muppets is lying through their teeth. Christmas may not be a favourite time of year for everyone but this film certainly ticks all the right boxes in terms of its classic status as one of the festive seasons most cherished puppet flicks.

Tim Burton’s dark and thrilling masterpiece is a well deserved Christmas viewing addition. From the snow capped city of Gotham to the festive parade that turns into a nightmare. It may not be for the kids, but it’s definitely a deserving Christmas film for the adults.

3. Gremlins

One of many Steven Speilberg classics, Gremlins may also not be one for the kids but it is without doubt one of the most symbolic Christmas films ever. While the nasty critters who cause chaos through this lighthearted horror scare us, as soon as Gizmo enters the scene, you cant help but fall right back in love with this iconic hit.

2. Home Alone

Home Alone is easily one of the most successful festive themed films made. Directed by teen film king John Hughes, the flick follows Kevin McCallister who has been left at home alone while his large family jet abroad for the holidays and his attempts to stop a comedic pair of burglars from breaking in to his lavish home. We are pretty sure this one will be played on TV quite a few times over the coming weeks.

1. The Nightmare Before Christmas

And here we are – our favorite Christmas film of all time – The Nightmare Before Christmas. An absolute masterpiece of cinematic artistry and storytelling, this stop-motion hit was created by the very talented Tim Burton (Beetlejuice, the early Batman franchise, Alice in Wonderland) and tells the tale of Jack Skellington, the most popular character of Halloween Town. After discovering a portal to Christmas Town, Jack and the people of Halloween Town plot to take Santa Claus hostage so that they can share the joy of the festive period – Halloween style of course. The film is executed with such intense detail and the script is superb. Without doubt the greatest Christmas film ever made.
