Single Review: The Joy Formidable – ‘A Heavy Abacus’

2 min read

North Wales alternative rock trio The Joy Formidable return with enthusiastic gusto presenting us with their rapturous new single, A Heavy Abacus, on July 11th. The single caps off the bands hugely successful tour of the US and is taken from the critically acclaimed debut record, The Big Roar.

TheJoyFormidableAHeavyAbacusStill a relatively new band, The Joy Formidable are quickly steering themselves towards success on both sides of the Atlantic with their strong, melodic pennings and have gained an impressive global following including Foo Fighters front man Dave Grohl who has cited the acts single Whirring as song of the year.

The Heavy Abacus stands as single number four to be taken from the bands debut album, following previous successful singles I Don’t Want To See You Like This, a re-release of early single Austere and Whirring. Though the record is the first for the outfit it isn’t the first we have heard from The Joy Formidable as a number of single releases taken from the bands 2008 EP, A Balloon Called Moaning, warmed us up to the appealing melodies of what we have been fed on The Big Roar.

The Heavy Abacus is a representative single for the debut album and one that is both memorable and exciting and gives a true indication of what The Joy Formidable bring to the table in terms of quality with the parent release. Bolshy front woman Ritzy Bryan leaps vocally throughout the track with her voice fitting to the shimmering melody that carries the radio friendly and hook laden single. Her confident and robust vocals make the track really stand out.

The Heavy Abacus proves to be a fantastic addition to the single releases from The Big Roar and a further insight to whats on the horizon for The Joy Formidable.
