Single Review: Union J – ‘Loving You Is Easy’

2 min read

Union J is yet another band created by the hugely popular reality television show The X Factor UK. Members Josh, JJ and Jaymi auditioned as a trio named Triple J, whilst George Shelley auditioned as a solo act. Both acts were sent home, but were given a second chance to come back; however, this was only if soloist George was added to the group. Both acts accepted these terms and Union J was born. They placed fourth in the show and have since released their self-titled debut album Union J.

Union J - Self TitledThe third single from this album is named Loving You Is Easy, and was penned by RnB singer Jason Derulo. Whilst Derulo is a seasoned songwriter, the lyrics for this song don’t provide much thought or depth, with the line “loving you is easy” making up the entirety of the chorus. The track does have a catchy, uptempo dance vibe to it, but it’s something that can be heard on countless other songs. The falestto on the chorus can become irritating and strained towards the end of the song, but overall the boys vocals and harmonies are pretty good.

Union J are slightly older than their other boyband competitors, with their youngest member aged 20 and the oldest aged 25. Therefore they should be using this to their advantage to create a more mature and edgy sound, rather than just delivering the same bubblegum pop as other similar artists. Loving You Is Easy offers nothing new or unique, and Union J will have to work harder to make themselves stand out from the crowd.
