Single Review: Sam Smith – ‘Writing’s On The Wall’

1 min read

The names Smith. Sam Smith. His mission: To write and perform the newest Bond theme for the upcoming film Spectre.

Sam Smith - Writing's On The WallSam Smith’s entitled his take Writing’s On The Wall and he’s aiming to show a much more vulnerable side to the infamous hard-edged James Bond, but unfortunately it really falls flat as a Bond theme. While it has the feeling of grandeur with the intense string sections aiding the rise and fall of the tempo to encompass the emotion Smith is delivering in his ballad it just doesn’t have any kind of impact. The song is sensitive and heartfelt but that’s not what James Bond is. Spectre will see Bond face to face with a sinister agency, lyrics like ” When you’re not here I’m suffocating, I want to feel love, run through my blood. Tell me is this where I give it all up? For you I have to risk it all.” don’t portray that in the slightest.

Writing’s On The Wall isn’t going to leave you shaken or stirred, maybe irritated or indifferent. It’s just not the big; bold number you’ve come to expect from this infamous track. Sam Smith took a risk that unfortunately doesn’t see him completing his mission.
