Single Review: Sam Smith – ‘Money On My Mind’

Sam Smith is a hype machine. After the success of Latch, the Disclosure track that Sam featured on, he went on to feature on the number one hit by Naughty Boy, La La La which has amassed over 211 million views on YouTube and won the MOBO award for best song. Then he went and released an EP, Nirvana, that was praised by critics and fans across the globe. Now he’s releasing his first single, Money On My Mind, and it’s an absolute gem.
Featuring piano, what sounds like finger clicks and some incredible drumming, the song is already strong instrumentally, however the real star of the song is of course Sam Smith’s unique, soulful voice. There is something about his voice that gets under my skin, in the best way possible.
The way he hits high notes is particularly spectacular. I also love the song’s slow, minimalistic bridge. And I guarantee that the chorus will be stuck in your head for days after a couple of listens.
This is a beautifully crafted song featuring a stellar vocal performance and I’m sure it’s going to be a huge hit for Sam. I look forward to hearing more from him in 2014.
