Single Review: Nicole Scherzinger – ‘Your Love’

Nicole Scherzinger is best known as the lead singer of former girl group The Pussycat Dolls. She released a solo album, Killer Love, in 2011 and whilst she had small successes with the two lead singles, the album itself was not a huge success. Since then she has gone on to be a judge on The X Factor UK and had a winning contestant in James Arthur. Now that she’s returned to her solo career, can Nicole Scherzinger make the breakthrough she’s hoping for with Your Love?
The confusion kicks in when the verse starts and Scherzinger’s voice comes across low and breathless. She was obviously going for the raspy seduction that few singers can pull off, and it’s difficult to understand why Scherzinger chose to sing the verses in such a low register, when her voice is obviously suited to a higher one. The melody doesn’t seem to know what’s going on either; it jumps about with a disjointed cohesion and weird tempo changes. The lyrics also leave much to be desired, with Scherzinger describing how her partner’s love makes her feel – yet at times the lyrics barely make sense in the context of the song. The word ‘baby’ is essentially shortened to ‘bby’, an annoyance that is amplified as it’s repeated probably a hundred times (I doubt I’m exaggerating).
For a 3:30 min song, Your Love seems to drag on awfully long. If Scherzinger was looking for a comeback for her solo career, this was the wrong song to do it with.
