Single Review: Matt Cardle – ‘When You Were My Girl’

It has been three years since a certain Matt Cardle won the UK version of The X Factor back in 2010. As is the unfortunate nature of talent shows which produce such a rapid – and almost cruel – turnover in artists, the time lapse between his winning the contest and the present day often feels far longer than it has actually been, and in some respects, Matt Cardle has definitely fell by the wayside of the teens of the following years, with both One Direction and Little Mix gaining extreme international recognition thanks to their legions of adoring young fans.
Now about to release his third album, Porcelain, Cardle’s sound has definitely progressed from the live performances he gave on the show, and also his early post-X Factor releases, such as Run For Your Life, Starlight, and his winner’s single, a cover of Scot band Biffy Clyro’s Many Of Horror, which was released under the title When We Collide. When You Were My Girl is the second single to be taken from Porcelain following the earlier release of the Mel C duet, Loving You and is far poppier than Cardle’s previous efforts. Beginning in a surprisingly muted fashion, with a funk oriented bassline and guitar riff, the song slowly builds to an explosively catchy and radio friendly chorus, with Cardle waxing lyrical on the crossed wires between himself and his love interest.
And speaking of Cardle, his voice lends itself very well to this funk infused song (of which one cannot help but wonder was influenced by Daft Punk’s recent rekindling of ’70’s disco), with his dexterous vocal chords reaching high notes that make the song’s chorus soar. If Cardle continues in this direction with future efforts, he could be onto a winner yet.
